Bromma Stockholm Airport

Bromma Stockholm Airport, situated along Ulvsundavägen in the western part of the Swedish capital, stands as a landmark with a notable history dating back to its official inauguration on May 23, 1936, by King Gustaf V. Originally constructed to alleviate growing air traffic needs, it was Stockholm’s first airport to handle both domestic and international flights on a paved runway, years ahead of its time in Scandinavian aviation.

During World War II, the airport played a strategic role, serving as an essential site for diplomatic flights and mail transport, despite Sweden’s neutrality. The airport has seen visits from notable historical figures, including British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and American diplomat Joseph Grew.

Over the decades, Bromma has adapted to meet the demands of modern air travel, such as becoming the Scandinavian hub for the innovative Swedish airline AB Aerotransport and later SAS (Scandinavian Airlines System). In the postwar era, it was pivotal in expanding Sweden’s domestic flight network during the economic boom, connecting Stockholm more efficiently to other regions. In the 1970s, the construction of Arlanda Airport shifted much international traffic away from Bromma, solidifying its reputation as a key terminal for short-haul and business flights.

Today, the airport is recognized for its close proximity to the city center—just 7 kilometers away—making it Sweden’s most centrally located major airport. Throughout its existence, Bromma Stockholm Airport has embodied the evolution of Swedish civil aviation, retaining its original terminal building, now a protected heritage site, and serving as a testament to Stockholm’s rapid modernization in the 20th century.
