Ekshärad Farmstead

Situated in the picturesque landscape of Stockholm, the Ekshärad Farmstead stands as a testament to Sweden’s rich rural heritage and distinctive architectural traditions. The farmstead’s buildings are true exemplars of Värmland design, with their humble log structures and characteristic red paint, reflecting Swedish farm life from the 17th to the 19th centuries.

The original Ekshärad Church, after which the farmstead is named, dates back to the 14th century, underscoring the deep historical roots of the area. Several of the structures at the farmstead were constructed during the late 1700s and early 1800s, representing a period of agrarian expansion and community development in the Swedish countryside. In the late 19th century, such farmsteads became central to the movement to document and preserve traditional Swedish folk culture, prompted in part by a wave of industrialization sweeping through the nation.

Today, the Ekshärad Farmstead is not only an evocative open-air museum but also hosts annual celebrations such as midsummer festivities, where visitors can witness authentic crafts and rural traditions come to life, offering a unique window into Sweden’s storied past.
