Located in the heart of Stockholm’s Södermalm district, Fatbursparken is a tranquil green space with a storied past dating back to the 17th century.
Originally, the site was home to the once-renowned Fatburen Lake, which was gradually filled in during the 19th century to accommodate the city’s rapid expansion and to mitigate the health hazards associated with stagnant water. The park’s name is derived from the historic Fatburs Brunn, a medicinal well established in the 1720s, attracting visitors who sought the supposed curative properties of its waters. Over time, the area transitioned from a popular spa destination to an industrial quarter before being transformed into the public park seen today.
Fatbursparken was officially established in the late 20th century, with major refurbishments completed in the 1980s as part of urban renewal efforts. This revitalization aimed to provide much-needed green space for a growing population while preserving traces of the park’s multifaceted history, including remnants of old industrial buildings and the original layout of the spa complex. Notably, archaeological finds during the park’s development offered insight into the daily life and health practices of Stockholmers centuries ago.
Today, Fatbursparken serves as a cultural and recreational hub, hosting seasonal events, and providing access to walking paths, lawns, and playgrounds, all while standing as a testament to the dynamic evolution of Stockholm’s urban landscape.
