Nestled in Hagalund, Solna, Haga Ocean stands as a remarkable public aquarium and marine science center, offering visitors a deep dive into the wonders of the world’s oceans.
Officially opened to the public in 2016, Haga Ocean was established to foster marine research and environmental education, drawing inspiration from Sweden’s long-standing maritime history and its tradition of scientific inquiry. Haga Ocean features a centerpiece 1.2 million-liter tank that recreates the ecosystems of coral reefs, showcasing a diverse array of marine species including sharks, rays, and vibrant tropical fish. The aquarium places a strong emphasis on the conservation of endangered marine life and actively participates in international research collaborations. Exhibits often highlight the significance of Sweden’s role in polar expeditions during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, particularly the pioneering oceanographic work conducted by Swedish explorers such as Otto Nordenskjöld.
Throughout its history, Haga Ocean has hosted educational workshops, community events, and marine biology seminars, becoming an integral hub for environmental awareness in the greater Stockholm area. The surrounding Haga Park, established in the late 18th century as part of Gustav III’s royal estate, provides a historical backdrop, linking the aquarium’s modern scientific mission with Sweden’s rich royal and cultural heritage.
Today, Haga Ocean continues to inspire curiosity and respect for the marine environment, serving as both a sanctuary for aquatic creatures and a testament to Sweden’s enduring legacy in exploration, science, and environmental stewardship.
