Located in the heart of Stockholm on Djurgården, Liljevalchs is one of Sweden’s most revered art galleries, renowned for its dedication to contemporary art and cultural exchange since its foundation. Opening its doors in 1916, the gallery was made possible by the generous bequest of Carl Fredrik Liljevalch and was designed by the distinguished architect Carl Bergsten, whose architectural vision introduced groundbreaking Functionalist elements to Swedish exhibition spaces.
Liljevalchs swiftly gained prominence for advancing modern art movements, notably hosting pioneering exhibitions such as the annual Vårsalongen (Spring Salon) since 1921, which has showcased the talents of both emerging and established Swedish artists for over a century.
Throughout its history, Liljevalchs has played host to landmark exhibitions and influential retrospectives, including early 20th-century displays of Nordic and international avant-garde art, as well as significant presentations by artists such as Sigrid Hjertén and Isaac Grünewald.
The museum’s commitment to innovation is reflected not just in its artistic programming but also in its continual physical evolution; a major renovation and expansion project completed in 2021 introduced the much-debated “Liljevalchs+” annex, designed by Wingårdhs Arkitektkontor, further enhancing the gallery’s facilities and visitor experience.
As an epicenter of Stockholm’s vibrant cultural landscape, Liljevalchs continues to foster creative and intellectual growth through a diverse program of exhibitions, lectures, and events, solidifying its status as a cultural landmark and a must-visit destination for art and history enthusiasts.
