Lill-Skansen, situated on the island of Djurgården in Stockholm, serves as Sweden’s oldest children’s zoo, having first opened its doors in 1955 as part of the greater Skansen open-air museum complex, which dates back to 1891. Lill-Skansen was conceived in response to a growing interest in nature and animal conservation in the post-war period, aiming to introduce young visitors to the world of Nordic wildlife through direct experience.
Over the decades, the venue has expanded to include a diverse array of domestic animals, rare Swedish breeds, and interactive educational exhibits, reflecting Sweden’s deep commitment to heritage preservation and environmental education. Following significant renovations in 2012, Lill-Skansen now hosts more than 30 species and maintains an active program of workshops and seasonal events, continuing its long-standing tradition of hands-on learning.
The site’s historical importance is underscored by its sustained contribution to public awareness about biodiversity and endangered species, making it an enduring destination for families and history enthusiasts alike.
