SS Sankt Erik

SS Sankt Erik, an imposing icebreaker, has been an iconic presence in Stockholm since its launch in 1915. Built at Finnboda shipyard, the vessel played a crucial role in keeping the city’s harbors operational through harsh Baltic winters, ensuring Stockholm’s continued international trade and supply route access during both World Wars.

Originally named Isbrytaren II, she was later christened Sankt Erik, drawing inspiration from Stockholm’s patron saint. Throughout her career, the icebreaker led convoys through the frozen archipelago, breaking paths not only for merchant traffic but also for Swedish naval operations during times of heightened geopolitical tension. Extensively modernized in 1958, Sankt Erik was equipped with enhanced diesel-electric technology and remains one of the oldest preserved icebreakers in the world. Since her retirement in 1977, Sankt Erik has served as a museum ship, inviting visitors to explore her grand salons, engine rooms, and historic bridges, offering a glimpse into Sweden’s maritime ingenuity and resilience throughout the 20th century.
