The statue of St. George & The Dragon, located in the heart of Stockholm, is a significant historical symbol commemorating the fierce battle between good and evil.
The current statue, a replica crafted in the 20th century, stands as a testament to its medieval original, which dates back to 1489. Commissioned as a tribute following Sten Sture the Elder’s victory at the Battle of Brunkeberg in 1471, it embodies Sweden’s independence from Danish rule.
Crafted by the renowned Bernt Notke, the original piece was commissioned by Sten Sture as a symbol of his triumph and is housed in Stockholm’s Storkyrkan. This intricate representation of St. George slaying the dragon not only signifies bravery and virtue but also encases within it a reliquary believed to contain relics of Saint George himself. The dragon, a symbol of evil and chaos, is immobilized underneath the knight’s lance, highlighting the struggle between forces of darkness and light.
The statue’s positioning at Köpmantorget makes it an integral part of the Old Town’s historical narrative, offering visitors a glimpse into the rich medieval traditions and the enduring legacy of Stockholm’s past.
