0:00 / 1:37Stockholm Arlanda Airport
Stockholm Arlanda Airport, Sweden’s primary international gateway, opened in 1962 to relieve growing congestion at Bromma Airport and usher in a new era of Scandinavian aviation.
Located approximately 40 kilometers north of Stockholm city center, the airport rapidly became a critical hub for both domestic and international travel. From its inauguration by King Gustaf VI Adolf, Arlanda has expanded to include four terminals and multiple runways, handling over 25 million passengers annually in recent years. The airport played a strategic role during the 1992 European Union summit hosted in Stockholm and saw substantial infrastructure upgrades for the 2003 Eurovision Song Contest.
Home to pioneering aviation technology, Arlanda houses Sweden’s first dedicated airport railway station, Arlanda Central, which began operation in 1999, vastly improving access to the capital. Notably, the Control Tower, a striking landmark, was completed in 2001 and is considered one of Europe’s most advanced air traffic control structures.
Over the decades, Arlanda has served as a linchpin during significant events such as the Cold War era, facilitating crucial diplomatic flights, as well as the 2017 Global Sustainable Airports Initiative, where it earned accolades for ongoing environmental innovations.
Today, Stockholm Arlanda is recognized not only for its vital transportation role but also as a symbol of Sweden’s commitment to efficiency, innovation, and international connectivity.
