Dominating the heart of Stureplan in Stockholm, Svampen is an iconic mushroom-shaped structure that has served as both a meeting point and architectural landmark since its unveiling in 1955.
Designed by architect Holger Blom, the concrete canopy was initially intended to provide shelter to pedestrians from Sweden’s unpredictable weather, quickly becoming a hub for city dwellers, socialites, and visitors alike.
Over the decades, Svampen has witnessed numerous cultural and historical events, including demonstrations, political rallies, and celebrations, such as the jubilant gatherings after Sweden’s victories in international sports tournaments. It has stood as a silent witness to the city’s continual evolution—from the post-war boom of the 1950s through the dynamic urban transformations of the late 20th century. The site remains a beloved symbol of Stockholm’s modernity and vibrancy, frequently featured in Swedish film, literature, and popular culture.
Today, Svampen endures not only as a practical shelter but also as a testament to the city’s commitment to functional yet distinctive urban design.
